Due to the many large fires in Colorado in 2002, the elk were forced to change some of their habitat to other areas to find forage. Over the next few years the burnt areas should provide more and better feed for the Elk herds. Very few Elk if any were lost to fire as they moved out ahead of the fires but will return this spring when the grass and forage begins it's new cycle of growth. The Colorado outfitters keep track of the elk herd movements and will be able to plan your hunt accordingly. Check out the outfitter and find the one that fits your needs. The type of hunt, the area or unit that you want to hunt, the amount of help or amenities that they offer. Most of them have everything from taking you in and dropping you off, to guiding you to the game and getting it back to camp. Most of the outfitters offer various types of elk hunts. You can stay in cabins, tents or lodges. You can choose to have a professional guide to help you or let them pack you back into the hunting area and leave you to hunt on your own.

Due to the mild weather and the dry hunting seasons; success ratio was down in 2002. This should make next year seasons yield more permits and bigger Colorado elk for the dedicated hunter.

The Colorado DOW has added another weekend to the 1st combined season. It will now run from Oct 18 -26. It looks like a large increase in Cow Elk permits will be again offered this year. CWD has been found in very few of the Elk tested and has not been linked to any illness in humans in contact with them. It is still a good idea to have your game tested for CWD in any state that you hunt just for your own peace of mind. Application
